Kelly Wells new men`s basketball coach

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – One of Kentucky’s most successful coaches in recent memory is returning home this week, as Kelly Wells has accepted the position of head men’s basketball coach at Pikeville College.

Wells, who coached Mason County High School to the 2003 Kentucky state championship and a runner-up finish in 2004, comes to Pikeville after spending two years at Hawaii Pacific and one as a head coach.

Wells replaces Dale Brown, who had served as interim head coach since taking over for Randy McCoy, who stepped down at Christmas due to illness. Brown was 3-14 after assuming the leadership role. McCoy was 140-79 in six years as head coach, leading the Bears to the NAIA Div. I national tournament on three occasions.

Wells, 35, said he was excited both personally and professionally. “This is an opportunity to be a part of the No. 1 conference in the nation, and participate against some of the best coaches in the country,” he said. “And personally, I can bring my family back home, where we have roots in both Kentucky and West Virginia.

Mac Bryan returns as head football coach

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – For its next head football coach, Pikeville College has gone back to its roots.

On Thursday morning, the college announced Mac Bryan as its new head football coach. Bryan replaces Jerry Mynatt, who resigned as head coach this spring.

Bryan was the first offensive coordinator brought to Pikeville when the school began playing football in 2000. His only season in Pikeville was the year the Bears played as a club sport.

Thanks largely to Bryan’s high-powered offense, the Bears went 7-1 that season. The wins came over league opponents like Cumberland, NCAA foes such as the University of Kentucky, and a prep school in Fork Union Military Academy.

“We really enjoyed Pikeville a lot when we were here before,” Bryan said. “We’re just really excited to be back here, excited to get going and ready to start coaching football.”
